Buying ceramic tools.

What zirconia does well, where it needs care, and what to specify before you place an order.

Ceramic or steel?

Zirconia is roughly 8.5 on the Mohs scale; kitchen steel is around 5 to 6. A ceramic edge therefore stays sharp far longer in normal home use and does not need steeling. It is also chemically inert, so it will not discolour cut fruit or leave a metallic taste, and it does not rust.

The trade-off is toughness. Ceramic is hard but brittle: it should not be used to chop bone, pry, or be dropped on a hard floor, and it cannot be sharpened on a steel rod. For boning, frozen food and heavy chopping, steel remains the right tool. For fruit, vegetables, herbs and boneless prep, ceramic is the better edge.

Care and use

  • Cut on wood or plastic board, not glass, stone or ceramic.
  • Wash by hand or in a dishwasher on a normal cycle; dry before storing.
  • Store in a block, a sheath or a drawer insert — not loose with steel tools.
  • Do not use as a cleaver, a scraper or a pry bar.
  • Occasional diamond-hone servicing is possible, but most users never need it.

What to specify in an enquiry

  • Model number, or the product type and size if you are still choosing.
  • Target market and retail channel — it changes packaging and compliance.
  • Handle colour and blade colour, if they differ from the catalog photo.
  • Packaging format: colour box, blister card, polybag or a set with insert.
  • Estimated first order quantity and whether a sample is required.

Common questions

Are the blades really unbreakable?

No. Zirconia is hard and brittle. It survives normal cutting and a drop onto a soft floor, but a hard impact or lateral prying can chip or break it. We do not market it as unbreakable.

Can ceramic knives be sharpened?

Only with a diamond tool, and rarely. Steeling or a conventional sharpener will damage the edge. For most buyers the practical answer is that the blade outlasts the handle.

What is the minimum order?

It depends on model and packaging. Stock colourways are lower than a new print run or a new set insert. Ask for the model you have in mind.

Do you supply test reports?

Where a report exists for the model and the destination market requires it, we will say so in the quotation. We do not attach generic certificates to unrelated products.

Can I order a sample first?

Yes. Samples are quoted with the configuration, and the approved sample becomes the production reference.
